This hidden Polish gem may not figure very highly on the average budget traveler's list of places to visit in the world. But with good prices, some fantastic historical attractions and some fantastic Wroclaw hostels, there锟絪 every reason for it to.
Located in the south-western Silesia region of the country, the multitude of architectural and cultural attractions both challenge and meet traditional expectations of a city break.
Accommodation
Unlike the busier cities of Krakow and Warsaw, where prices have begun to rise steadily, it锟絪 still a cheap Central European backpacking destination. Wroclaw hostels, too, are attractively priced compared to their larger neighbors, and are of an excellent quality.
The latest instalment of Nathans Villa Hostel was always likely to be a reliable choice 锟?and so it proves! The Stranger Hostel Wroclaw is an achingly trendy place, while Cinnamon Hostel is just around the corner from Pasaz Niepolda, a hub of Wroclaw nightlife. Mleczarnia Hostel, on the other hand, is absolutely stunning, with lashings of old world charm.
Sights
The striking beauty of this city is evident right the way across the city, with grand and delicately designed buildings vying for attention along the city's skyline. However, the cream of the crop for many budget travelers is undoubtedly the impressive Wroclaw Cathedral, decorated with grandiose figurines that date back to the 13th Century. For music lovers, it also boasts the largest organ in Poland.
In terms of other architecture, a good starting point in the city is the Rynek central town square, which is flanked on every side by buildings of cultural and historical interest, as well as serving travelers with a selection of bars and restaurants from which to enjoy the surroundings.
The National Museum is also a must-see, featuring a large collection of Polish art that the budget backpacker will find hard not to enjoy.
Smells and Tastes
Perhaps the most surprising free feature in Wroclaw is its botanical offerings. Even more bizarrely, one of the city's most attractive is the Japanese Garden dating back to 1913 (the landscape was even recently restored with the assistance of the Japanese government).
But if traveling just beyond the summer months when the Japanese Garden and Wroclaw's own Botanical Gardens are unlikely to be at its peak, the huge Park Szczytnicki offers an autumn alternative that offers a very pleasant city escape.
In terms of drinking spots, the hoppy delights offered at the 14th century Piwnica Swidnicka beer cellar will most definitely compete with the best of the rest from other regions. It is also an excellent retreat from the tourist hubbub of the streets above, providing a veritable labyrinth of stairwells and hideaway nooks and crannies that serve only to add to its character.
Wroclaw also boasts an exceptional number of traditional Polish eateries known as Bars. Although functional, the food offered is cheap, and provides an insight into the country's domestic culinary delights 锟?a million miles away from the tourist trap offerings at some other eateries.

LONDON, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The go-ahead has been given by the British government to the building of what will be Britain's biggest offshore windfarm, with the ability to create enough energy to power two million homes.
The Dogger Bank wind farm will be built in the North Sea, almost 124 kilometers off the coast of Yorkshire in Northern England.
As well as creating work for 900 people, the farm, when built, will generate 2,400 megawatts of electricity.
There are already 6,000 wind turbines operational in Britain, around two thirds of them off shore in the seas around the British Isles.
Announcing the development, the government's Energy and Climate Change Secretary of State, Ed Davey said: "Making the most of Britain's home grown energy is creating jobs and businesses in the UK, getting the best deal for consumers and reducing our reliance on foreign imports. Wind power is vital to this plan, with 14.5 billion pounds invested around the UK since 2010 into an industry which supports 35,400 jobs."
The Dogger Bank project is being led by Forewind, a consortium of four big-name energy suppliers, British-based SSE and RWE, and Norway-based Statkraft and Statoil.
Forewind spokesman Tarald Gjerde said the organisation's four owners are thrilled that the first consent for the Dogger Bank Zone has been granted, taking the flagship development a step closer to supplying the UK with "such a significant amount of renewable energy, and to realising the many potential economic opportunities, particularly on the east coast."
"Achieving consent for what is currently the world's largest.
