BEIJING Douglas Costa Juventus Jersey , Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- A former supermarket manager who fled to Thailand after suspectedly embezzling public funds has been seized by police in an international manhunt.

The suspect, surnamed Zhang, 36, a manager of an office supplies supermarket in Beijing, was alleged to ask a financial staff member to transfer 14 million yuan (2.3 million U.S. dollars) from the supermarket's account to his personal account on July 30, 2013 in the name of procurement, according to the Beijing police on Wednesday.

Zhang then transferred the money to Thailand. He fled to Cambodia with his parents on Aug. 4, 2013 and arrived in Thailand later.

Zhang illegally obtained Thai nationality and crossed into Chinese borders three times with a Thai passport, according to the police.

With coordination from Chinese Ministry of Public Security, the Thai government revoked Zhang's passport. He was caught at a Thai airport on Dec. 1, 2014 and was turned to Beijing police on Dec. 14.

Chinese police have seized more than 400 suspects from 60 countries and regions in an international manhunt called Operation Fox Hunt since July, targeting corrupt officials and economic criminals.

PARIS, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Despite calls for a return to normalcy after the Charlie Hebdo and Jewish supermarket tragedy earlier this month, France's Muslims are bracing themselves for reprisals.

Mourad Ben Azizi, a French national of Tunisian origin, wondered "how Muslims will go on living normally in a country where Muslims are believed to be behind all the violence and attacks in France."

Mourad fears his sons may be subject to racist reactions at school and that the Paris shootings will further fuel Islamophobia in France.

To Imane Toumi, a student of international trade, hateful remarks towards Muslims are to be expected after the Paris shootings.

"Even if people do not say it openly, deep down they think that we Muslims are the root cause of terrorism, extremism and all related wrongdoings following the irresponsible acts by a few in the name of Islam," she told Xinhua.

"Once again, they (the shooters) argued their attack was to defend Islam and our Prophet. Once again, they were defending their version of Islam by presenting a wrong picture of our religion and because of that we could risk our lives or even our jobs," Imane added.

Dozens of attacks on mosques were reported across France since Cherif and Said Kouachi killed 12 people in an attack on the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo's headquarters to "avenge" the publication of cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammad.

Cherif has reportedly confessed he was funded by al-Qaeda Yemen. His associate Amedy Coulibaly killed a policewoman and four others at a Jewish supermarket in Paris. The 32-year-old unveiled his links with Islamic State in a short interview with the news channel BFMTV broadcast after his death.

Following the tragedy, Dalil Boukaker, the rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, issued a statement saying he was "worried about anti-Muslims acts and called on authorities to be vigilant to ensure the safety of mosques."

French President Francois Hollande tried to reassure the Muslim community by stressing, "Muslims are the first victims of fanaticism, fundamentalism and intolerance."

"Islam is compatible with democracy and we should refuse any confusion (about this)," he added.

CAPE TOWN, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday pressed the South Africans Football Association (SAFA) for clarity on on alleged corruption surrounding the 2010 World Cup.

This came after President of SAFA Danny Jordaan confirmed on Sunday that an amount of 10 million U.S. dollars was indeed paid to the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), but claimed that this money was to support their football development fund and was not a bribe.

"The revelations of alleged corruption do not discount South Africa's achievement of hosting a very successful World Cup (in 2010). However South Africans deserve to know if money changed hands improperly in our name," said Solomon Malatsi, DA Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation.

He said the DA will be asking a series of Parliamentary questions to get clarity on the issue.

South Africans want to know why the 10 million dollars was paid to the CONCACAF in 2008 by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and which South African representative authorised the payment from FIFA to CONCACAF on behalf of South Africa, Malatsi said.

Other questions include:

Why was this money allocated to CONCACAF out of all the world football confederations, including the Confederation of African Football?

"We will also be submitting questions to get clarity on which members of the LOC made trips to Paris in 2004. This could establish the identity of the 'high-ranking South African bid committee official' who handed over a briefcase full of cash to a family member of Jack Warner, at a Paris hotel as a bribe to secure his vote for South Africa to host the World Cup in 2010," Malatsi said.

The 2010 World Cup is, and will remain, one of South Africa's shining achievements but it is vitally important to interrogate if corruption was involved in this event, he said.

South Africa's Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula last week dismissed allegations that the government paid bribes to host of the Soccer World Cup 2010.

South Africa has been sucked in the FIFA scandal which led to the arrest of seven people in Switzerland last Wednesday.

It had been alleged that South Africa paid 10 million dollars in kickbacks for hosting the event.

Mbalula said his department is yet to receive a copy of the allegations from the United States and promised to do everything in its powers to unearth any shenanigans.
