Audiences await the fruits of a coproduction deal that's serving as an encouragement to filmmakers in China and South Korea. Wang Kaihao reports.
When Tang Wei recently stepped on the red carpet at the Busan International Film Festival that is still underway in South Korea, Chinese moviegoers had one more reason to take note of films from the neighboring country. The popular Chinese actress had just announced her marriage to South Korean director Kim Tae-yong.
In July, China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television Melker Hallberg World Cup Jersey , and the South Korean ministry of culture, sports and tourism, signed a film-coproduction agreement to promote closer bilateral ties.
Bad Sister, a romantic comedy directed by Kim Tae-gyun, will be screened in China in November. The film is about a Chinese astrologer's efforts to halt the wedding of his brother to a Korean woman and will be the first joint production released after the agreement was signed. Most of the work on the film had been carried out earlier, though.
"We had initially wanted an exotic story that involves someone like an Arabian prince Marcus Rohden World Cup Jersey ," says Ji Erwei, a Chinese producer of Bad Sister. "But finally we chose a South Korean background, which is easier for shooting schedules, and the result may also be closer to Chinese audiences' tastes. South Korean soap operas have been very popular in China."
Since he had worked on the coproduction prior to the official policy announcement, Ji considers the bilateral treaty as more of an encouragement.
"I don't see a great change after the agreement, but the gesture will bring a bigger market in the long term Linus Wahlqvist World Cup Jersey ," he says.
Still, according to the agreement, co-produced movies will be treated as domestic productions and will not be required to be cleared for screening through the annual quota of foreign movies. Approval procedures and the exchange of personnel in such projects will also be easier, trade analysts say.
Chinese and South Korean filmmakers have worked together in the past as well.
In 2000, China Film Co-production Corp and Taewon Entertainment produced the martial arts film Bichunmoo. The cooperation, however Kerim Mrabti World Cup Jersey , has yet to yield influential works, says Fan Xiaoqing, a professor of cinema at the Communication University of China and an advisor of the Busan International Film Festival.
Most such past projects only witnessed shooting some scenes in each other's country and mixed casts.
"An ideal coproduction should be one with Chinese investment and South Korean technical expertise," she says. "To better attract the Chinese audience, the chief scriptwriter should be Chinese and most of the dialogue should be in Mandarin. But South Korean writers could be included because of their storytelling skills."
Fan cites Feng Xiaogang's The Assembly (2007) as one of the most successful Chinese movies made with a Korean technical crew. It created a new cooperative model for others to follow. She also points out to the failed Mr. Go. The co-investment venture from last year depicts a gorilla playing baseball, neglecting a basic fact: Baseball isn't a popular sport in China.

A big Korean name who recently came over to China is Jang Tae-yu, director of the popular television series My Love from the Star. He joined the Beijing-based Yue Hua Entertainment in September.
One new project that looks promising is Miss Granny, a fantasy romance produced by Korean conglomerate CJ Entertainment & Media, which is scheduled to be released in 2015. The film, directed by Leste Chen from Taiwan with an all-Chinese cast Joakim Nilsson World Cup Jersey , will be the Chinese version of the well-received South Korean film with the same English title released earlier this year.
"Although the Chinese script was written simultaneously as the Korean one, the Chinese film was shot five months after the Korean one," Hu Cheng, the producer from CJ, says.
"It's a trial, and we will do more such projects if this succeeds."
But will there be one love story too many? Fan admits that the selection of movie themes for cooperation remains tricky Jacob Rinne World Cup Jersey , especially when it comes to controversial historical topics.
Fan cites as an example the Korean blockbuster My Way (2011), a melodrama about a friendship strained by World War II. Fan reveals the producer originally planned to cooperate with Chinese film companies. But China's film authorities vetoed the idea, and in the end only Chinese actress Fan Bingbing was involved.
Yet, not all is lost.
